Five J.Dilla Beats I Could Listen To Forever

I have heard a fair share of J Dilla’s extensive production catalog and out of a good amount, I’ve picked a quick five that I immediately zone out to once they hit the speakers. Vibe with me…

Let The Dollar Circulate: how did he extend the voice sample to sound damn there flawless and in tune with the beat? Love it.

Crazy Verse – Common “The Dreamer” (Verse 1)

Ever since this song dropped I have been a fan. It gets constant rotations on my pod. At first I was attracted to the song by the production and Common’s flow. It was all so effortless, then I began to really listen to what he was talking about in the lyrics. His word selections were so descriptive and witty. His delivery was confident not cocky. Check out these lyrics. Continue reading

The New Moon Rode High In The Crown Of The Metropolis

In hip hop, where you’re from appears to be treated like a badge of honor. You hear it all the time in tracks, “Yo I’m from [enter city name here]”. A lot of rappers big up their cities, repping it like it’s the place to be but here, the opposite is done. Blackstar and Common point out all of the ills of their environment and the effect it’s had of their people’s lives in “Respiration”. The picture that this track paints isn’t a pretty one. Is it accurate? You tell me. Respiration, breathing, “a breathing city”, you hear it at the beginning
of the track in spanish, “Escuchela.. la ciudad respirando”. The city is a beast, an animal.

“The shiny Apple is bruised but sweet and if you choose to eat…you could lose your teeth, many crews retreat” –Mos Def

This concept isn’t a new thing though, only it’s done a different way. Giving vivid descriptions of the NY environment has been tackled a lot but the few great standouts that come to mind, Nas covered it from a first person view in “N.Y. State of Mind“, Jay-Z showed the good in “Empire State of Mind“, AZ and Rakim touched on it from an illuminati perspective in “We Can’t Win“. Its a love/hate relationship for sure, Blackstar and Common focus on the latter which is the reality of two cities, New York and Chicago. More so from a political, mental, cultural point of view, expected from legendary conscious MCs. Young at the time, it seemed that this was them going through growing pains realizing the real city that they really grew up in. It comes off as a brain dump of views and feelings as Mos Def repeats “so much on my mind, I just can’t recline.” It almost seems like they are saying “this is why you shouldn’t come here”. The lyrical content is powerful, meaningful and thought-provoking, touching on various subjects but it also keeps your head with a steady bob.

“Look in the skies for God, what you see besides the smog is broken dreams flying away in the wings of the obscene” –Talib KweIi

That bob would be because of the Hi-Tek instrumental. The track wouldn’t be fully a classic without excellent production. Hi-Tek provides a great backdrop to the three substance-filled verses. I often get a eerie feeling when hearing the beginning sounds. It almost sounds like the same sample chop but played at different levels. The bassline is another thing that stands out, its a little different than what we’re used to hearing. It’s at a different rhythm and tone, kinda like how you hear on Biggie’s “Warning“. Respiration is one my favorite beats because of the sounds used, so complex yet so simple. Check the instrumental below. I assume the opening Style Warz excerpt was put in to capture the essence of what was to come and the spanish speaking female added on even more. This is a well crafted track, the video was just as good. Black and white, city shots, big coats and hoodies, Kweli on “shitty steps”, you gotta love it.

“Its deep I heard the city breath in its sleep, a reality I touched but for me, its hard to keep” – Common

“Respiration” is just one of those tracks for me that just represents good music to the fullest, it will never get old and it was always bang. I get the same great feeling every time I hear it, a flawless track.

The new moon rode high in the crown of the metropolis
Shinin, like who on top of this?
People was tusslin, arguin and bustlin
Gangstaz of Gotham hardcore hustlin
I’m wrestlin with words and ideas
My ears is picky, seekin what will transmit
The scribes can apply to transcript, yo
This ain’t no time where the usual is suitable
Tonight alive, let’s describe the inscrutable
The indisputable, we New York the narcotic
Strength in metal and fiber optics
Where mercenaries is paid to trade hot stock tips
For profits, thirsty criminals take pockets
Hard knuckles on the second hands of workin class watches
Skyscrapers is collosus, the cost of living
Is preposterous, stay alive, you play or die, no options
No Batman and Robin, can’t tell between
The cops and the robbers, they both partners, they all heartless
With no conscience, back streets stay darkened
Where unbeliever hearts stay hardened
My eagle talons STAY sharpened, like city lights stay throbbin
You either make a way or stay sobbin, the Shiny Apple
Is bruised but sweet and if you choose to eat
You could lose your teeth, many crews retreat
Nightly news repeat, who got shot down and locked down
Spotlight to savages, NASDAQ averages
My narrative, rose to explain this existance
Amidst the harbor lights which remain in the distance

[Hook]
So much on my mind that I can’t recline
Blastin holes in the night til she bled sunshine
Breathe in, inhale vapors from bright stars that shine
Breathe out, weed smoke retrace the skyline
Heard the bass ride out like an ancient mating call
I can’t take it y’all, I can feel the city breathin
Chest heavin, against the flesh of the evening
Sigh before we die like the last train leaving

[Talib Kweli]
Breathin in deep city breaths, sittin on shitty steps
We stoop to new lows, hell froze the night the city slept
The beast crept through concrete jungles
Communicatin with one another
And ghetto birds where waters fall
From the hydrants to the gutters
The beast walk the beats, but the beats we be makin
You on the wrong side of the track, lookin visibly shaken
Taken them plungers, plungin to death that’s painted by the numbers
With Krylon applied pressure, cats is playin God
But havin children by a lesser baby mother but fuck it
We played against each other like puppets, swearin you got pull
When the only pull you got is the wool over your eyes
Gettin knowledge in jail like a blessing in disguise
Look in the skies for God, what you see besides the smog
Is broken dreams flying away on the wings of the obscene
Thoughts that people put in the air
Places where you could get murdered over a glare
But everything is fair
It’s a paradox we call reality
So keepin it real will make you casualty of abnormal normality
Killers Born Naturally like, Mickey and Mallory
Not knowing the ways’ll get you capped like an NBA salary
Some cats be emceeing to illustrate what we be seeing
Hard to be a spiritual being when shit is shakin what you believe in
For trees to grow in Brooklyn, seeds need to be planted
I’m asking if y’all feel me AND THE CROWD LEFT ME STRANDED
My blood pressure boiled and rose, cause New York niggas
Actin spoiled at shows, to the winners the spoils go
I take the L, transfer to the 2, head to the gates
New York life type trife the Roman Empire state

[Hook]

[Spanish speaking woman] Escuchela.. la ciudad respirando

[Common]
Yo…on The Amen, Corner I stood lookin at my former hood
Felt the spirit in the wind, knew my friend was gone for good
Threw dirt on the casket, the hurt, I couldn’t mask it
Mixin down emotions, struggle I hadn’t mastered
I choreograph seven steps to heaven
And hell, waiting to exhale and make the bread leavened
Veteran of a cold war It’s Chica-I-go for
What I know or, what’s known
So some days I take the bus home, just to touch home
From the crib I spend months gone
Sat by the window with a clutched dome listenin to shorties cuss long
Young girls with weak minds, but they butt strong
Tried to call, or at least beep the Lord, but didn’t have a touch-tone
It’s a dog-eat-dog world, you gotta mush on
Some of this land I must own
Outta the city, they want us gone
Tearin down the ‘jects creatin plush homes
My circumstance is between Cabrini and Love Jones
Surrounded by hate, yet I love home
Ask my God how he thought travellin the world sound
Found it hard to imagine he hadn’t been past downtown
It’s deep, I heard the city breathe in its sleep
A reality I touch, but for me it’s hard to keep
Deep, I heard my man breathe in his sleep
A reality I touch, but for me it’s hard to keep

[Mos Def and Crew]
So much on my mind I just can’t recline
Blastin holes in the night til she bled sunshine
Breathe in, inhale vapors from bright stars that shine
Breathe out, weed smoke retrace the skyline
Yo how the bass ride out like an ancient mating call
I can’t take it y’all, I can feel the city breathing
Chest heavin, against the flesh of the evening
Kiss the Ide’s goodbye, I’m on the last train leaving

He Had To Sample This

Listen to the Nottz produced “Ya Heard” from Game’s L.A.X. album and then listen to Common’s “Thelonious” off the Like Water From Chocolate album. Both tracks are nice, but there is something I been wondering for a minute and thought was an interesting find. I think Nottz sampled and/or used elements from Common’s jam. There are no sample credits for “Ya Heard” in the album booklet (one of the samples is Newcleus’ Jam On It) but listen to three things in the 2 tracks: Continue reading

100 Drake Quotes

Drake has been doing his thing for a while so why not take a snapshot of some of his best quotes. While gathering these lines I started to understand that there’s more to his talent than I initially expected. He has the ability to express human emotion through down to earth lyrics. He also has skills when it comes to storytelling which is something that we all can appreciate from time to time. He has some nice one liners, What’s your favorite?

  1. “my 15 minutes started an hour ago”
  2. “October’s own but it’s looking like July 4th
  3. “you never see it coming, you just get to see it go”

What would The Roots sound like without Black Thought?

I got to thinking tonight while I was watching The Roots perform on tv and I was so drawn in by the whole composition of their music. Black Thought’s flow was effortless and it meshed so well with their instruments. At that moment I started to think what if Black Thought never was part of The Roots, what would their music sound like. I want to know what others think about that scenario too. Here’s what I came up with Continue reading
