Like many hoop fans out there, I’ve been excited to see what the new Nets will look like on the court. Will they be any good? With Jay-Z in the mix and it being in Brooklyn, I wonder how much involvement will he have in the music played during games. Something about me loves to hear hip hop played in public places where there is a diverse audience. As far as I’m concerned, everyone should get a good dosage of hip hop at a NBA game – it just makes sense. Well, I got a chance to see their home opener last night against another team with a bunch of new faces, Toronto Raptors. While the game was a good one, I paid attention to the music played during it. S.G. and I had this convo a week or so ago, with all the brooklyn anthems and quotables in hip hop which ones are most appropriate to be played? Here’s some of the tracks and quotables I had in mind to be played during the game, introduction, halftime, timeouts, etc….
Fabolous – Brooklyn (ft. Uncle Murda & Jay-Z) – The chorus at least. Sampled from the infamous Biggie freestyle, this is sure to get the crowd going.
Quotable: ODB – “Brooklyynnnnnn Zoo!” – I doubt we’ll ever hear this but just the thought of it during a game is ill to hear the “one man army, Ason”
Jay-Z – “Where I’m From” Instrumental – this was a no brainer. The beat alone will get the least-expected heads nodding during a game
Quotable: Notorious B.I.G. – Juicy: “Spread Love, its the Brooklyn way…” of course.
Quotable: Notorious B.I.G. – “So where you from?…..Brooklyn” Start the night off with this one.
Quotable: Mos Def – “Brooklyn”: “We live in Brooklyn baby….” Gotta throw some Mos in there somewhere, please.
“Cause it’s the B-the-R-the-O-the-O-K
L-Y-N is the place where I stay
The B-the-R-the-O-the-O-K
Best in the world and all USA
It’s the B-to-the-R-the-O-the-O-K
L-Y-N is the place where I stay
The B-to-the-R-the-O-the-O-K”
LL Cool J – “Doinit” This track is a bit too x-rated to be played at a game but during the intro there is a nice piece to loop with a Brooklyn chant sampled from Top Billin I think. Before you play it though, call the producer of this track and have him take out those moans, this is a G rated event. haha.
Jay-Z – “Brooklyn, We Go Hard” – just loop the chorus and you’re set.
Return Of The Crooklyn Dodgers Instrumental – Pregame music to set the mood? I just love the beat. Only a select few in the arena would recognize this classic.
During the game last night, “Where I’m From” was played during the player introductions which was nice to see and also I heard the Fabolous joint…I think during a timeout after a run. It was a good look, maybe they will add others like the ones above throughout the season? Fat chance.
That’s all I could think of off the fly, any other good tracks or sound bites that you would want to hear at a Brooklyn Nets game?
Beastie Boys-“Hello Brooklyn”
